Turbeskrivelse
An easy, interesting walk starting at the historic Surveyor General Pub. The path to the river skirts the southern side of the Berrima Prison - a very old prison, now operational again. Along the river, pause at Lambies Well and look for the 1915 signature of a German internee. Along the river edge there are 17 history boards with photos and information about the amazing world that was created by the German internees who were held in the prison from 1915-1919. During the day, they were allowed to wander. Elaborate huts were created, boats were made, regattas were held. If you are walking with children you might want to turn around when you reach Board 17. I continued onward for a while (there is a narrow visible path) to see the rocky section of the river where the Germans made a dam (since demolished by floods etc). Then, I found a narrow path that allowed me to walk a loop through the forest before rejoining the river walk for the return. My trail returns by the northern wall of the prison. Don't miss the beautiful metal bull's head above a trough for horses, set against the prison wall. You then pass by the old Berrima Court House, which now contains a museum. At walk's end, perhaps a drink in the Surveyor General Pub, the oldest continuous licensed premises in Australia.
