The Canvey Island circular walk offers a unique blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage, making it a distinctive experience for walkers.
Starting at Benfleet Station, the route follows the sea wall, with wide views of the Thames Estuary, Hadleigh Castle, Southend Pier, and even out to the North Sea. Along the way, you’ll see sea wall murals that tell the story of Canvey’s past, including its connection to the rock band Dr. Feelgood.
There’s also a nod to Charles Dickens, who mentioned The Lobster Smack pub in Great Expectations.
The walk is about 15 miles (24.1 km), taking most of the day to complete. You’ll pass The Lobster Smack pub later in the walk, and if you decide not to finish the full route, there are bus stops around the 6- or 8-mile marks that can take you back to Benfleet Station.
The flat terrain and mix of estuary views and marshlands make this a varied and interesting walk. Also make sure you have a pint at the end of the walk at the Barge Gladys, a lovingly converted barge which looks like an old English pub.
